Please go through the following content and watch the video before continuing onto its latest iteration as this is the original starting point of the fortune cookie series of fighting misconceptions and hatred against the Asian Community.
To start a conversation, I enlisted the help of a friend to give out some cookies to real life Asians on the streets and in restaurants. They opened up and talked about their "Asian" experience. After that we gave all of the rest fortune cookies to the restaurants to carry the torch and keep it going. Here’s the case study video.
Ever since Covid-19 happened, hate crimes against Asians are happening left and right non-stop. It felt like the public was given a permit to hate Asian people, to bully and assault them without any consequences. What’s worse? People are not paying attention, or they saw the news and pretended it didn’t happen. This ignited a fire in me to continue this fortune cookie project. These unauthentic, America-invented Chinese takeout throwaways, have the advantage of spreading words fast and vast. So why not change what they do? Give them the responsibility to spread the news, and let people know what is happening to the Asian American Community.
Misfortune cookie will feature news reports on anti-Asian hate crimes committed in America or potentially internationally. Instead of the appropriated old wise sayings. So when people crack the cookie, pull out the paper, they will learn the latest hate crime against Asian community and the source of the news. On the back of the paper, we will feature resources (mainly links/QR codes) to point out ways for people to learn more about what’s happening with hate crimes or to help those Asian Americans who are affected. These fortune cookies will be distributed among restaurants that are interested to take a stand.
The Misfortune Cookie AR filter will allow people to crack the cookie and get the info digitally, making it easier and much more efficient to spread the word online.
An interactive installation will be placed on streets, people who walk by can choose to interact with that to draw information from the fortune cookie.
